File this in the who would have thought it category.
Researchers in Australia did a trial on greenhouse-grown tomato pollination using bees and using vibrating hand-wands. Both are routinely used in commercial greenhouses.
We already know that wand-pollination reduces seed setting compared to the bees but now the researchers have shown that bee-pollinated tomatoes actually taste better than the hand-pollinated.
Seems there are more solids in tomatoes if the bees pollinate them than if they are done using a wand.
Who would have known? But there you are – find a way to promote bee visits in your garden and you may have better tasting tomatoes.
In your own garden, use lots of good nectar-producing flowers mixed in among the tomatoes and other vegetables. And yes, this means we’re going back to potager gardening. I do wonder if this is consistent between vegetables or whether it’s only tomatoes.
