Torenia have always had a special spot in my gardening heart. They aren’t showy by any means with their small violet-blue and white flowers but their delicate nature adds a certain charm to the container garden in the part shade to shade.
In the face of the impatiens problems, plant breeders are working like crazy on replacement plants and this is one of the first generation of Torenia to come to market (mind you, it was likely in development before we lost impatiens but I digress) 😉
I purchased this plant in spring 2013 to run some container trials.
Details of Torenia ‘Grape-o-licious’
Flower Color white with purple centers resembling small pansy
Spring 2013 I planted several of these plants in different containers to see how they would perform under slightly different sunlight conditions. The plants were a little sparse and needed tip pruning when they were planted to thicken them up. (probably crowded too much on the growing bench)
Fall 2013 and Summary. Good plant, trailing habit so it’s perfect plant for container use.
Limited use in the bedding plant border because of the tendency of the flowers to hang – facing down.
Where I Would Use It
I’d use it as an accent plant in containers again to provide a lighter tone with darker plants. One of the best Torenias I have grown.

Torenia. I grew three for testing this year.
And I love all three of them and can’t make a choice.
All are part to shade garden plants and all are low, spreading plants growing to 8-inches tall in my garden. They are apparently heat and deer resistant but deer resistant wasn’t tested (to the best of my knowledge) in my garden this year. All three did very well in both containers and ground trials and I’d grow any or all of them again.
